Day... 2?

On NPS 1, in the fall of 2009, DMA and I couldn't make it to the east side of Yellowstone due to a wild fire. So, for this trip, we made it a point to make the Yellowstone Canyon our first destination. All I can say is So.... Beautiful! We arrived at sunset to scout out a spot & started night shooting! The pic below was taken at around 9:30 pm; I thought that I captured airplane trail in the sky, but after taking a closer look, it turns out to actually be a star trail! The cliffside is illuminated by moonlight. Pretty cool, eh? Sunrise was wonderful. It was misty, and cold, and it just felt amazing to be perched so high and be able to watch the canyon walls emerge from the darkness.
Nothing like a nice sunrise, eh? The picture below is my unedited, "before" shot...
... and this is my attempt to make the sunrise pop a bit. Aaaah... thats more like what I remember!
After the night of sleeping in the car & frigid morning, we found some warm coffee. yum.

We continued our journey around the canyon & found some rapids. I, of course, focused on the smallest part of the scene... the spray coming from the crashing water.

Oh, and then I looked up and noticed these glorious sun rays...

By high noon we were on the other side of the canyon... what a difference lighting makes! This view of the falls is so contrasty and sharp compared to dreamy softness of the sunrise.

On NPS 1, we also couldn't make it to the north side of Yellowstone Lake, so, guess where we went next.... yup. Yellowstone Lake. The image below is of the Abyss Pool... or actually, I think it is Black Pool, even though it isn't black. The colors are beyond amazing. Who knew bacteria could be so... pretty?

My memory is a bit fuzzy... I think after this point we headed into West Yellowstone... home of the BEST bison burger (check out Bullwinkles if you are ever in the area!)

Man, I love the NPS trips... looking forward to continuing the edits of my other pics from the trip!

here you are in a perfect location with the perfect amount of light from the moon and a clear sky and instead of actually paying attention to what you are doing you shoot something and think "oh, I guess that's cool. look a plane".

You are not a photographer. If you'd like to be a photographer, which I'm assuming you want to based on this blog, then I'd suggest studying it more. You put yourself in amazing situations and don't even bother to understand the lighting, composure or prospect of a shot. It's beyond frustrating to see.

Obviously this is a passion of yours, and I don't know if it's because you've got a shooting partner who you are maybe allowing to have all the good shots or you really just don't know what you are doing but please, for the love of photography, start reading, researching and studying this thing that you call your passion. Because, as is, you're doing it, and yourself, a big disservice.

Post this, or don't post this. I don't care. I just hope it makes you think a little bit harder about what you are doing when you go out on these adventures. You have an opportunity to be great, but you are squandering it by not paying attention.

Hey there... ouch.

I actually don't recall claiming photography to be my passion, or claim to be any sort of expert. I am a student, I am learning, and I am posting the good and the bad on this blog. This is a way for me to track my progress, not a showcase of all things awesome.

I wish I had the luxury of time to pour over books and engulf myself in all things photography. That is not the way my life is right now.

You actually seem rather displeased with my blog. That is fine; feel how you want to feel. No need to attack though, simply move onto a blog that is more pleasing to your eyes.

Man....Photogs are such haters. No one has anything nice to say anymore. I think the pictures are great! Clean with nice comps and simple edits. I think it is refreshing to see especially in todays world of HDR. Besides anonymous I think you missed the point of what photography actually is and how cowardly to leave such a comment and no links to your own or even a name. If you looked a bit harder you would realize the "plane" you see is actually a star and the trail it leaves behind is due to the fact that she took a long exposure. This is quite evident with the other trails around it in the sky. Perhaps you should brush up on your basics too. I am sure you can find something about long exposures at your local book store. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the support, my dear friend. I know you have had more than your fair share of photog hate. I really don't understand it. Like you, I am just posting my stuff. Neither of us are forcing anyone to look, so, logically, if people don't like it they can just be on their merry way... right?

As I re-read what I wrote ont the post & Anonymous' reaction to the supposed plane trail, I am wondering if Anonymous thought that I *intentionally* took a picture to get a plane trail? HA! So not the case!!! I probably wrote my thoughts down wrong. I do that.

You know, when you are out in the field, it is hard to see on the teeny tiny LCD screen what exactly you captured. What I meant is that I *thought* the big star was plane. What do you do when you are freezing your assets off, tired beyond belief because you drove all day AND your battery is about to die (love the D200... blah). You can only take so many frames & sometimes they don't work out. Planes happen. Seven months later, I actually was going to edit it out, then noticed that it followed the same curviture as the other stars and figured, Dang... it wasn't a plane after all. I dunno... I am trying to give Anonymous the benefit of the doubt.

But anyways... why am I writing all this... I will catch up with you tomorrow when we adventure up!!! ;)
